Ms. Lo Hwei Yen has been killed by terrorists

28 year old Lo Hwei Yen - the Singaporean lawyer held hostage in the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai - has been killed. Her body was found on the 19th floor of the hotel where she had been held hostage.

My heart goes out to Ms Lo's family for their tragic loss. I am particularly upset maybe because this is a fellow Singaporean who has been killed. In class when we study about terrorism and its impacts, we often reduce the issue to facts, figures, statistics. Many Sec 4 students can probably write an A1 Social Studies essay (complete with the standard 3 factors and a conclusion) on terrorism. But how often do we remember that it is not just about facts and figures? Lo Hwei Yen is more than a number. She is not just the 1st Singaporean victim of a terror attack. She is not just 1 of the 130 people killed in the Mumbai terror attacks. She's a person whose absence will be felt by the husband, family members, friends, colleagues she left behind and who will have to cope with this tragic loss - a tragic loss that resulted from some senseless, dastardly acts of terrorism.
