The Sam in the caption "Let Sam do it", refers to a man named Uncle Sam, a character often used to represent the USA in cartoons.

The figure on the right should be Uncle Sam. As mentioned in the caption, the people that were standing on the left of the cartoon were all pointing their fingers to the person on the right, and the chaos that was happening outside the door. Hence, the person should be Uncle Sam as the people on the right are ordering Sam, who was representing the United States of America(USA) to stop the fight between the two countries in the background. Although the USA was the one who insisted on the League, USA was not a member of the League of Nations, and this resulted in the negative views of the League.

The two countries in the background was fighting against each other. It all started when Japan started extending its control over neighbouring countries using a "co-prosperity Sphere" policy. Hence, on the night of 18 September 1931, Japanese soldiers patrolling the Japanese-owned Southern Manchurian railway line near Mukden, heard an explosion and gunfire. The Japanese troops were then shot from the darkness. Believing that they were under attack from the Chinese they called for more troops and began to fire back and soon, a large scale fighting had broken out. From then on, China and Japan started undergoing many other fights.

The representatives of the League of Nations were requesting USA to be the country to stop the fights between China and Japan, as it was the USA who wanted to create the League of Nations.

From the actions of the representatives of the League of Nations, I can deduce that the League was not very successful. One of the main aims of the League was to prevent any other wars, as the people in Europe had suffered the trauma of one of the worst wars up to date. However, the League was unable to disarm the countries that was in the League, and to add on to that, the League was also unable to stop further fights between countries, which caused it to fail in maintaining world peace as well. We can also learn from the source that the countries involved in the League was also scared to be the one to stand out and stop the fight between Japan and China, and would rather go with the crowd and request USA to be the country to stop the fight. Hence, we can also deduce that the countries involved in the League only used it as a way to protect themselves from fights with other countries, and did not intend to stop the other countries from attacking one another.

In the caption 'Let Sam do it', Sam refers to Uncle Sam, someone often used to represent the USA in cartoons such as this one.

The figure standing on the right is Uncle Sam who is currently being 'invited' through the door by the representatives of the League of Nations as USA was seen as the one who has insisted on starting the League of Nations.

The 2 figures in the background are Japan and China. As can be seen from the cartoon, the 2 of them are fighting with one another as Japan took over more and more of Manchuria to 'defend Japanese rights in the area'. This eventually led to conflict after some Japanese troops were shot while they were in China, leading to the Japanese calling for more troops and beginning to fire back. Soon, there was large scale fighting taking place. It was however believed that the Japanese were not shot by Japanese troops and it was all an excuse to fight back and seize control of Manchuria.

The representatives of the League of Nations were trying to get USA to go and stop the fight between China and Japan probably because they felt that USA was the one who had insisted on starting the League of Nations.

The members of the League of Nations were more concerned about their own interests than to ensure world peace as can be seen from the cartoon whereby the representatives only wanted USA to stop the fight instead of doing it themselves. This is also so as when Japan attacked China, violating League principles, who were supposed to take action until the offender backed down, did not do so and tried to push the responsibility to other countries attempting to protect their own interests. The country, in this case is the USA, represented by Sam with the caption of the cartoon 'Let Sam do it" shows that countries were unwilling to take action against offenders as they were afraid that by taking actions such as imposing economic sanctions would hurt their economies.

1 Sam refers to The United States of America.
2 Uncle Sam, or the USA
3 They are fighting.
4 They are urging Uncle Sam to do something about the fight between Japan and China
5 I can learn that the League Of Nations look to the USA for help and support and have no real ability to stop wars between countries. They rely on superpowers to help control the warring nations and are helpless when the superpowers are unwilling to help.

In the caption "Let Sam do it", the Sam should be referring to the person on the right side of the cartoon,as this character, Uncle Sam is a character that is often used to represent USA in any cartoons.

The figure on the right should be Uncle Sam, representative of USA, as the group of people at the left side were all pointing their fingers towards the person on the right side and at the background of the cartoon. In conjunction with this, the caption also mentioned to let Sam "do it", and the "do it" here refers to settle the conflict between Japan and China. Hence, the person on the right should be Uncle Sam.

The two figures at the back of the cartoon are involved in a fight with each other. It all started when Japan was involved in a "co-prosperity Sphere" policy, which extended Japan's control over neighbouring countries, and on the night of 18th September 1931, when some Japanese troops were patrolling the Japanese-owned Southern Manchurian railway line near Mukden, heard an explosion and gunfire. The Japanese troops were then shot at from the darkness. Believing that they were under attack from the Chinese they decided to call for more troops and began to fire back. Soon, large scale fighting had broken out. From then on, China and Japan were involved in much more internal wars with each other in 1937.

The League of Nations representatives were all standing united as a group on the left side of the cartoon, pointing their fingers at Uncle Sam to try and request him to be the person who will stand up against the conflict between Japan and China. This was due to the fact the although USA was the country which insisted on setting up the League, the USA was not a member of the league. Hence, the members of the League thought that since USA was not serious about it himself, why should they be serious about it? Hence this resulted in the pointing of fingers on Uncle Sam, whom they thought was responsible for all these quarrels.

From the actions of the representative of the League of Nations, we can deduce that the League was a failure. This is due to the fact that the main aim of the League was to maintain world peace through peaceful settlements of countries, but the League was unable to resolve the misunderstanding between China and Japan, as it was believed that the Chinese soldiers were not the ones who started shooting the Japanese troops on the night of 18th September 1931, but it might actually be Japanese soldiers acting as Chinese soldiers, shooting their own comrades, and seize the chance to take control over Manchuria. Adding on to the problem, the League was a failure as the members of the League was unable to stand up against the wrong side, in this case Japan, and decided to wait for USA, who was not a member of the League to begin with, to stop the conflict. This showed that the League was useless in preventing world peace, as the members themselves were not concerned about it, and were only concerned about themselves. This can be seen from the fact that both France and Britain used the League as a place to discuss things. Therefore, from the given two examples listed above, we are able to deduce that the League was not successful in meeting its own aims, and was thus deemed as a failure, as the members were also not cooperative.

The cartoonist is saying the League of Nations was a failure because USA which is Uncle Sam did not join the League of Nations. USA insisted on the League but was not a member as they adopted the policy of isolationism. USA was a major power so being not involved in the League of Nations makes the League a failure. In the background, the cartoon shows that Japan and China fighting. Without USA, the keystone in the League of Nations, the League is unable to stop the war so the other members of the League of Nations are urging USA to go and stop the fight between China and Japan.

The cartoonist is trying to say that the league of nations is a failure. From the source, it shows that the league of nations is failure because it cannot stop or intervene the war that broke out between China and Japan. The 'Sam' referred to the President of the then USA,Wilson. The 'Sam' can be also referred to the United States of America as a whole. From the source, it is evident that the league of nations is trying to urged America to stop the outbreak, however the league of nations itself did nothing and thus is can be seen that the league of nations have not succeed at achieving one of its aim: maintaining world peace, therefore can be seen as a failure. One of the reasons to why the league of nations is a failure because USA which is a major power,in terms of military did not joined the league of nations as it adopted the policy of isolationism, therefore greatly reducing the ability of it maintaining world peace.

In this cartoon, the League of Nations is represented by the group on the left. The figure on the right, who is Sam or Uncle Sam, refers the United States of America.
The scene at the background represents a fight between Japan and China. At the same time, the League of Nations representatives are pointing fingers at each other, not taking any action. Uncle Sam, representing USA, is standing at the corner, not interfering with anything.
This shows that the League were not able to resolve the conflict between China and Japan, and the USA did not lend a helping hand.
The cartoonist is trying to show that the League of Nations were ineffective and helpless without help from superpower nations like USA, hence having very little ability to stop wars and conflicts worldwide.

It appears that in this cartoon, China and Japan were fighting. Clearly seen in the picture, the League of nations don't seem to be stopping the fight. Instead, they are all pointing towards a man on the right of the room, whom I presume as 'SAM' or the USA. It appears that when nations are fighting with one another, the League of Nation rendered helpless without the help of other major powers such as USA.When the disputes is settled, it would be seen that the league settled the dispute when instead it had lots of help from other countries. This proves that the league is helpless in terms of settling disputes between countries.

I believe the League of Nations is trying to get USA(Uncle sam in the picture) to prevent the fight of Japan and China. I think that the cartoonist is trying to say that the league proved useless when major powers such as USA are not willing to help them to prevent wars among other states. In other words, the league cannot do anything if major powers do not want to help.

In the cartoon, USA is represented by the man wearing a USA flag costume, Sam. As the League Of Nations was created by mainly USA, it was dependant on USA. As in the cartoon, the League is inviting the Sam to stop the fight between two man. In the cartoon, the League has far more people than Sam but still, the League asked Sam to stop the fight instead of stopping it themselves. This represents that the League is quite powerless and dependant as it cannot stop fights between nations and has to ask for help from USA. The fight between the two man represents the fights between Japan and China. As Japan was the once the member of the League and China also a member of the League, this shows that the League is powerless when it comes to fights between major powers in the League and must request for help. The cartoonist is trying to be sarcastic and critical about the League as he showed in the cartoon that the league is timid and the League members shows the invitation hand sign for Sam to go out the door and solve the fight. He is critical by also showing that the League has many men but is powerless to stop a fight between two men and has to "invite" only one person the stop the fight Sam. The cartoonist is sarcastic in the way he explains his cartoon with "Let Sam do it". This phrase shows the the League is pushing the responsibility of maintaining peace to USA. He is also sarcastic in a way that Sam is much more older than the League but the League is asking an old man to stop the fight. The purpose of the cartoon is to humiliate the League and also to show that the League is useless and unwilling to help. This is also to sway people from supporting the League as he wanted the people to believe that the League was useless.

The cartoonist is saying that the League of Nations is weak without military support from major powers like USA, in this case represented by Sam. The two figures fighting are China and Japan and they would not stop fighting unless they are forced to do so. The League can only force them to stop by using military means so as to let the fighting countries back down. The League's military force must also be strong and powerful if not, the aggressor can easily defeat the League's military, thus, USA's military force is needed to stop the fighting and the League mainly relies on powerful countries for help in these kind of situations.

In the picture,Sam refers to a the United States. The person on the right of the picture is probably Sam, the representative of the United states. The background of the picture seems to show an argument between China and Japan. Perhaps, the argument might be referring to the invasion of Japan into Manchuria and China. They appealed to the League of Nations for help. The representatives of the League of Nations were worried about the conflict between Japan and China as the League tried to condemn Japan to leave Manchuria and China but to no avail. These representatives then tried to persuade the US government to assist them in solving this dispute as US is one of the major powers. From the cartoon, I can deduce that The League of Nations still lacked the ability and legitimacy as a world body to settle major disputes between countries as the membership of it does not consist of major powers like US, USSR or Germany. Thus, the League of Nations lacked enforcement capability, it could not stand up against aggressions and therefore unable to maintain peace.

The cartoon shows China and Japan fighting, while the league of nations are pointing to sam or the USA to settle the dispute between japan and china. This shows that the league had lacked enforcement power and depend on the major powers like USA to settle the dispute. The cartoon also shows that the league of nations are not willing to work together and just depend on the US to settle the dispute. As most countries are more interested to protect themselves rather than ensure world peace or helping settle disputes.

The cartoon tells us that the League of Nations were unable to prevent the conflict between Japan and China due to the lack of resources, since the major powers such as the US and Russia were not part of the League. When conflict broke out between Japan and China, the helpless League of Nations could only look to the US, represented by the man of the right in the cartoon, for help. The League of Nations are pointing to the major powers the conflict between Japan and China. Fron this, i can see that the main motive of the League Of Nation is to ask the major powers to resolve the conflict between the 2 nations. Despite the major powers not involved in the League of Nations, but the absence of major powers was one of the reason why there are failures in the League. From the action of the League, i can infer that the League wanted the major powers to join the League of Nation so that this kind of conflict would not happen and are blaming the major power for the outbreak of the war. Hence this cartoonist is trying to persuade the major powers to join the League so that the world could be a better place.

I think the cartoonist is trying to say that a good number of the smaller nations who joined the League as members (as represented by the all the men wearing top-hats and black coats in the cartoon’s left) lacked the influence, power, military strength, or courage to stop more major members, like Japan and China (as represented by the two men fighting in the cartoon) from interfering and halting any disputes or grievances between them, and instead coaxing and persuading other equally powerful members like the United States of America ( portrayed as the character “Uncle Sam” in the cartoon’s right ) to step in and settle matters instead. This shows that the cartoonist has strong thoughts that the seemingly united League of Nations, whose main purpose is to maintain peace through the peaceful settling of disputes between countries, was actually powerless and lacked the ability to do so, and thus was a major failure as an organisation.
